Subsidized Domestic Electricity Account Holders

9 July 2020

PUBLIC NOTICE
Subsidized Domestic Electricity Account Holders
Subsidized Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) Domestic Post-Pay and Prepay Customers are currently
receiving the following electricity subsidies from the Government of Fiji and EFL on a monthly
basis.
Under the Government Electricity Subsidy Scheme for qualifying Domestic Post-Pay & Prepay
Account Holders, the Government pays 48% of the cost of the first 100 units of their electricity
consumption per month.
Due to the COVID-19 Global Pandemic, in addition to the Government Electricity Subsidy, EFL
subsidizes for the remaining 52% of the cost of the first 100 units of electricity consumption
per month as from April 2020 till December 2020 for domestic account holders who qualify and
are registered for the Electricity Subsidy.

Post-Pay Subsidized Domestic Account Holders
The Government & EFL Electricity Subsidy amounts will be credited to the monthly electricity
bill and account holders will only be paying the VAT component for the first 100 units of
consumption. Additional units, in excess of the subsidized 100 units per month, will attract the
normal domestic electricity tariff plus VAT. In the event the customer has used less than 100 units during the month, e.g. 80 units, then the subsidy that will be provided will only be for 80 units and the customer will pay the VAT component for the 80 units.

Prepay Subsidized Domestic Account Holders
The Government & EFL Electricity Subsidy for the first 100 units will be added to the electricity
top up as units on the first prepay electricity token purchased in the consecutive month. VAT
will also be deducted before the additional units are calculated and added to the prepay
electricity token. In the event the customer has used less than 100 units during the month, e.g. 80 units, then the subsidy that will be provided will only be for 80 units minus VAT.

How is the Electricity Subsidy Converted into Units for Prepay Domestic Account Holders
on Government & EFL Electricity Subsidy?
A Prepay Subsidized Domestic Account Holder purchases electricity token worth $40.00 (108
units of electricity inclusive of VAT) in July, 2020. Their first purchase for electricity token in
the consecutive month, August 2020 is $10.00. The following will be the units received upon
top up on their electricity token for the month of August 2020:
- The first purchase of say $10 in August 2020 after the VAT portion is deducted is 27 units
- The quantity subsidized by the Government for the first 100 units consumed in July 2020 is
44.08 units
- The EFL Electricity Subsidy for the first 100 units purchased in July 2020 is 47.67 units
- VAT will be deducted before the units are calculated for top up in August, 2020
Therefore, the total units received by the customer to their prepay meter in the month of
August 2020 will be 118.75 (27+44.08+47.67) units.
