GIS TECHNICIAN (WESTERN)

The position will be based at the EFL’s Navutu Depot and will report to the GIS Coordinator.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze drawings and schematics and plan to carry out field data capture by travelling to field and utilizing handheld GPS equipment to capture EFL asset GPS location data and update EFL GIS database;
  • Work with other GIS staff to regularly maintain and update GIS database in Microsoft Access using prudent programming practices;
  • Work with other GIS staff to customize EFL’s GIS MapInfo software employing MapBasic programming for custom queries, improve its user friendliness, automate quality assurance checking of field GPS data and to generate custom reports for users;
  • Analyze, extract and disseminate data from the EFL GIS to internal and external stakeholders for various major projects and developments;
  • Ensure EFLs GIS and GPS equipment is in working condition and regularly maintained, and provide feedback to Team Leader on required equipment upgrades;
  • Regularly update EFL network coverage maps for increased network penetration and distribute to relevant stakeholders;
  • Innovate methodologies and processes to improve EFL’s use of GIS and movement towards international best practices in the fields of GIS/GPS systems;
  • Provide timely customer service to internal and external customers by release of GIS data as required and resolving GIS/GPS related queries;
  • Assist GIS Coordinator in conducting regular user trainings for use of EFL GIS systems for users;
  • Ensure all documentation for the EFL GIS system is properly maintained with the with GIS Office, and develop/document user guides for use of GIS system;
  • Assist in functioning of the GIS Office by updating and issuing electrical single line schematics for various project and operational work as requested by various parties, update Drawings Database and issue new drawing numbers;
  • Provide regular updates on GIS data capture work;
  • Ensure at all times that HS considerations in all facets of activities are of top priority;
  • Carry out other related duties as assigned by the GIS Coordinator or Unit Leader System Studies & Protection.

Key Requirements:

  • The candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree in Geographic Information Systems or Computing Science with at least 3 years work experience in similar role, or a Diploma in Geographic Information Systems with at least five (5) years’ work experience in a similar role;
  • Be proficient in the use of GIS software, preferably MapInfo and MapBasic, or a similar software package;
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of tidy Visual Basic programming;
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of GIS concepts and analytical techniques, including computerised mapping and digital data conversion, manipulation and analysis, GIS database administration and management principles, methods and techniques, including quality control methods and practices;
  • Have working knowledge of MS Office suite of applications, especially in MS Access, MS Excel and MS Word;
  • Be physically fit to travel to field to carry out field data capture work at regular intervals and for prolonged periods away from station/base;
  • Have a working knowledge of Computer Aided Engineering (CAD) software, preferably AutoCAD;
  • Candidate must possess a clean Group 2 (not provision) driver’s licence is required;
  • The candidate must be able to demonstrate that he/she can live the EFL values.
