POWER STATION OPERATOR - 5 POSITIONS (WESTERN)

The positions will be based at the EFL’s New Vuda Power Station and will report to the Team Leader Thermal.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operates the synchronizing set, voltage regular controls (automatic and manual) governor motor controls, circuit breakers, field switchers, and inter connectors. Operates the transformer voltage controls for substations at various stations according to prescribed procedures and standards;
  • Keeps timely watch on frequency meters, power factors meters voltage meters and indicators, according to prescribed procedures and standards;
  • Follows Authority instructions in the prescribed procedures for shutdowns (planned and emergency), stopping and starting of machines and load shedding;
  • Receives records and conveys instructions, messages from consumers or other means;
  • Physically or by immediate or general supervision ensures that the electricity diesel engine generators and auxiliaries are regularly serviced as prescribed by oiling and greasing the moving parts at periodically prescribed intervals.  That lubricating agents, fuel and water cooling tanks are at prescribed levels, that a watch is kept for apparent faulty conditions such as oil, fuel and water leaks, and apparent strange engine noises, and with the physical assistance of the Assistant Power Station Operator stops and starts engines, reads and records engine performance control instruments and meters, records lubricants and fuel consumption during shift operations in Log Book. The cooling tower fans are serviced at timely prescribed intervals. The frequent visual checks are made on fan. Ensures that engines and surroundings are kept in a clean condition including the mopping or sweeping of floors;
  • Ensures that a check is made to see that lubricant, fuel and cooling water tanks are at prescribed levels, both when entering on and when leaving shift and ensures that necessary adjustments are made. Ensures that main fuel tanks are correctly filled during delivery of fuel, by the closing and opening of the appropriate valve.
  • Ensure that dipstick readings are taken prior and after delivery and confirms amount delivered. Supervises the transport of lubricant drums to pumps and supervises the filling of tanks either by motor driven pump or manual pump;
  • Ensures that compressed air bottles are filled to the prescribed pressure;
  • Ensure that correct starting procedures are followed and after starting ensures all is well before synchronizing the set to the supply;
  • Ensures that immediately after engine is stopped crankshaft is turned to prescribed starting position. If the engine is not in use ensure that it is covered as required which will involve use of crane;
  • Ensures that prescribed intervals oil supplies in crankshaft bearing are at prescribed levels;
  • Ensure that the power station is well secured to protect engine from natural hazards or fire;
  • Maintain the Occupational Health and Safety requirements of both EFL and Fiji Legislation;
  • Carry out any other duties as assigned by the Team Leader.

Key Requirements

  • The candidate should have a Certificate IV/Trade Certificate in Fitting & Machining or Plant Engineering from a recognized tertiary institution;
  • A minimum of three years’ experience as Assistant Power Station Operator or eight years’ experience as Assistant Power Station Operator;
  • Computer literacy is essential.
