Protection Engineer
The position of Protection Engineer is based at the Authority’s Head Office in Suva and will report directly to Unit Leader System, Studies and Protection.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design and maintain protection schemes for the entire power system;
- Compile standards on design and maintenance procedures for protection systems;
- Initiate and approve conceptual plans prepared by Network Design Department;
- Provide technical input advice to Procurement staff;
- Investigate and submit timely reports on system disturbances;
- Investigate and evaluate developments in power systems protection technology;
- Monitor and report on capital and maintenance works on protection systems;
- Prepare specifications and evaluate tender procurement of protection and control equipment;
- Review protection designs and schemes for projects;
- Prepare power system protection data report;
- Train/up skill personnel to carry out accountabilities;
- Consult & Cooperate with other peers to optimize power systems;
- Innovate methodologies to meet accountabilities and introduce fit for purpose new technologies as appropriate;
- Develop appropriate supply system governance procedures;
- Recommend appropriate technical parameters for project proposals and for system reinforcement/refurbishment;
- Carry out power system fault analysis and transient stability studies for design of a stable power system;
- Document all work procedures relative to the business;
- Endeavour to continually bridge the benchmark gaps as set out in the scorecard;
- Ensure at all times that HSE considerations in all facets of activities are of top priority;
- Responsible for vehicles and tools and equipment in the section;
- Conduct Safety Audits and team/individual tools and equipment checks;
- Carry out other work as required by the Unit Leader System Studies and Protection.
KEY REQUIREMENTS
- Candidate should have at least a Degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized Institute with at least seven (7) years of work experience in power generating, transmission or distribution utility as an electrical engineer;
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications is required;
- A valid Group two (2) (not provisional) driver’s license is mandatory;
- The candidate must be able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of power system analytical techniques and working knowledge of project and contract management;
- Experience with power systems analysis software used for load flow and fault studies is required;
- Must be a member of a Professional Engineers Body.
The position will be offered on a three (3) year contract basis.
